What Is Alzheimer’s Disease?
Several factors contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. One factor is the presence of abnormal structures in the brain known as amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary. The latter are tangled bundles of fibers that also are called tau. Additionally, there is a loss of connection between nerve cells, or neurons, located in the brain, which affects the memory and the ability to function., Other changes in the brain also have been implicated in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. This condition is the focus of intensive scientific research and many clinical trials, and the medical community is continually gaining more information about Alzheimer’s.

Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease
Memory problems are the most common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. However, affected people also may experience changes in their reasoning abilities, and their behavior may become affected over time. They also may have a diminished ability to speak. Decision-making and planning may become more difficult, and family members or friends may notice shifts in personality traits, as well.
Here are some of the most common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease:
- Memory loss, including difficulty remembering recent conversations or events.
- Forgetfulness, associated with time, place, or plans.
- Language difficulties, specifically problems with word-finding and expression.
- Mood swings, including depression and noticeable changes in personality.
Risk Factors for Alzheimer’s Disease
There probably isn’t just one cause of Alzheimer’s disease, and researchers are working to better understand the roles of genetics, environmental factors, and lifestyle choices. The following are well-established risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease:
- Age: Most cases occur in people over age 65.
- Genetics: About 1% of cases are known to be caused by genes, and Down syndrome is also considered a risk factor.
- Family history: Alzheimer’s disease may run in families, and having a first-degree relative with the disease places a person at increased risk for Alzheimer’s.
- Falls and head trauma: Head injuries have been linked with dementia. That’s why people should develop and maintain core strength, wear helmets during sports activities, and fasten seatbelts in vehicles.
Conversely, research has shown that controlling blood pressure, following a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and maintaining social connections may reduce the risk for Alzheimer’s disease.
Infusion Therapy for Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease is not curable at this time. However, researchers have developed several treatments that may help slow associated cognitive impairment, including the effect on memory. In 2021, the U.S. Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new medication that is for Alzheimer’s disease that is administered by intravenous infusion. This treatment is thought to be effective in eliminating the amyloid plaques in the brain.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, your doctor will determine whether this infusion treatment might be of benefit. It is not recommended for all patients, and specific criteria must be met.
What Is Infusion Therapy?
Infusion therapy is the term used for administering medication intravenously. The injection method usually involves inserting a needle into a vein on top of the hand or in the arm. The medication goes directly into the bloodstream. This therapy is often used to administer chemotherapy to patients with cancer, but it can be used for a variety of other conditions, as well. Consult our infusion therapy FAQs for more information.
