Katherine Linder, MD, is a hematologist/oncologist at John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center who specializes in the care of people with acute and chronic leukemias. She is also involved in clinical trials assessing promising new leukemia treatments. Dr. Linder chose leukemia care and research because she feels it is one of the most exciting fields in hematology-oncology. New molecular immunotherapies are being developed that are improving outcomes for both younger and older patients. Moreover, she likes that she can see the results of these treatments fairly quickly in people with leukemia versus other types of cancer. When she first meets a patient and family, she speaks to them with compassion and understanding and finds out how much they want to know, presenting information honestly and as simply as possible. She tailors her messages to their needs and preferences. Patient care gives her the opportunity to lift other people up at one of the lowest points in their lives. Leukemia care can be a roller coaster, with lots of up and downs. She considers herself their cheerleader, hanging on with them for the ride. Dr. Linder is a member of national organizations such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
